11.9. Removal, check and installation of a brake drum

Removal

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. At existence remove a wheel cap, then weaken bolts of fastening of a back wheel.
2. Lift a back part of the car and fix on supports.
3. Remove a back wheel.
4. Release the hand brake.
5. Unscrew the screw of fastening of a brake drum and remove a brake drum.
6. If the brake drum is kept by brake shoes, remove a cap from an opening in a brake board and, using a screw-driver, move a control lever of the hand brake to a brake shoe in order that brake shoes departed from a drum.

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Being careful, clear an internal surface of a brake drum of a brake dust and dirt.
2. Clear an external surface of a brake drum and check on obvious signs of wear or damage, and also existence of cracks round openings under bolts of fastening of a wheel.
3. If necessary replace a drum.
4. Check an internal part of a brake drum. Insignificant development of a drum from action of brake shoes is the normal phenomenon. The repoint of a drum is not recommended.

Installation

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. At installation of a new brake drum remove from its surface a sheeting layer.
2. Check and, if necessary, clear interfaced surfaces of a brake drum and a nave.
3. Reduce length of an adjusting level of brake shoes, rotating an adjusting wheel of a level.
4. Establish a brake drum and fix it the screw.
5. Several times press a brake pedal to put in action the mechanism of adjustment of a gap of brake shoes.
6. If necessary adjust the hand brake.
7. Establish a wheel and lower the car.
8. Tighten bolts of fastening of a wheel the demanded moment.
